From the History of the Palace
Santa Cruz’s Marquis Gerónimo de Santa Cruz contacted the stonewall and the construction of the palace was started in 1583, which was finally completed in 1621. It was largely rebuilt in 1908. It was the headquarters of the province’s civilian board and police station until 1950. Currently known as the Almodóvar Palace, located on Plaza de Santo Domingo, and has been in the hands of the family since the second half of the 17th century. In February 2020, it became part of the Fuertes Group’s property, and planned renovation work is expected to start in March. The project should be completed in September 2025. The latest discovery is a document where a work order has been made for the stonewall, which, to the details, specifies what Marquis wanted him to build and how. When Duchess Almodóvar died in 1814, the building began to decay until the city council bought it in 1990 and he facilitated the restoration of the palace. Its indoors have the remains of the Sant Roc chapel and wall paintings from the Middle Ages. The Almodovar Palace was declared a historic monument in 1974.

Santa Cruz is a district in the municipality of Murcia. Plaza de Santo Domingo is one of the most prominent urban areas in the city of Murcia. Buses depart from the bus station to Cartagena and Alicante, as well as to other major nearby cities.
